The Hell Week Mindset: Finding Your Financial Silver Lining

It’s 2:00 AM on a Tuesday in Coronado, California. I’m neck-deep in the Pacific Ocean, linked arm-in-arm with my classmates. The water is 58 degrees, the wind is cutting through my skin like a straight razor, and my body has been shaking uncontrollably for three days straight. This is Navy SEAL Hell Week.

In that moment, your world shrinks. You don’t think about Friday. You don’t even think about breakfast. You think about the next five minutes. But there’s a specific psychological shift that happens to the men who don’t ring the bell. We call it finding the "Silver Lining." For us, it was the horizon. We were constantly scanning the dark for that tiny, almost imperceptible sliver of grey that meant the sun was coming up. Because once the sun comes up, you’re warm. Once you’re warm, you can keep fighting.

That’s the mindset I bring to the world of financial consulting at My Business Is Your Business/All Into Life. Because for many of you: the barbers, the welders, the single moms fighting to build something real: your financial life feels like Tuesday night in the surf zone. You’re cold, you’re tired, and you’re wondering if the sun is ever going to rise on your bank account.

I’m here to tell you that the sun is coming up. You just need the grit to stay in the water and the strategy to catch the light.

The Horizon is Your Hope: The "Wilma" Mindset

When I talk about our clients, I often talk about "Wilma." Wilma isn't a corporate executive in a tall glass building. Wilma is a woman with a purpose. She’s the heart of her family. She’s ready to fight for her future, but she’s tired of being sold "products" by guys in suits who have never had dirt under their fingernails.

Wilma understands grit. She’s been through her own version of Hell Week: maybe it was a divorce, a job loss, or just the soul-crushing weight of mounting debt. The difference between those who drown and those who swim to shore is Hope.

In BUD/s (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training), hope isn't a wish; it’s a tactical advantage. In your finances, hope isn't "wishing" you had more money. Hope is having a plan that you know works. It’s the discipline of a Warrior-Steward. When we look at debt, we don’t just see numbers; we see a violation of the Law of Stewardship. Debt is a rucksack full of bricks you weren't meant to carry. My job is to help you cut the straps.

Myth-Buster: The "Buy Term and Invest the Difference" Trap

Let’s get gritty for a second. There is a massive misconception in this industry called "Buy Term and Invest the Difference" (BTID). It sounds great on paper, doesn't it? It’s the "paper tiger" of the financial world.

The myth is that you can buy the cheapest insurance possible and then magically have the discipline and the market luck to invest the rest into a 401k or a brokerage account and come out a millionaire. But here’s the reality: most people don't actually "invest the difference." Life happens. The car breaks down, the kids need braces, and that "difference" disappears into the void of daily expenses.

Even if you do invest it, you’re walking into a minefield without a metal detector. When the market drops 40% (like it did in 2008), your "difference" gets cut in half. You’re back in the cold water, shivering, with no sun in sight. We’ve written extensively about why Buy Term and Invest the Difference is a tactical failure.

The Urgent Correction: If you are betting your entire retirement on a strategy that leaves you 100% exposed to market crashes, you aren't investing; you’re gambling with your family’s legacy. Your next step shouldn't be "more of the same." It should be a strategy that protects your downside while capturing the upside.

The Sword and the Shield: Strategic Growth

In the SEAL Teams, we don't go into a fight with just a weapon; we go in with a system. In your financial life, I want to give you the Sword and the Shield.

This is the "Best of Both Worlds" narrative. Imagine a strategy where you can participate in the massive gains of the S&P 500: like the 400%+ climb we’ve seen from 2012 to 2026: but you have a 0% Floor.

This is the "Shield." When the market crashes, your account stays flat. You don’t lose a dime of your principal. We call this "Asset Armor." When the market recovers, you aren't spending five years just trying to get back to "even." You’re starting from the peak and moving higher.

Whether we use an EIUL (Indexed Universal Life) or a VUL (Variable Universal Life), the goal is Strategic Growth. You don't have to sacrifice safety to get growth. You just need to structure the deal correctly. That’s what we do at My Business Is Your Business. We help you build a blueprint for wealth that stands up to the storms.

The Rule of 72: Your Wealth Capacity

Have you ever heard of the Rule of 72? It’s a simple math trick to figure out how long it takes for your money to double. You take the number 72 and divide it by your annual interest rate.

If you’re getting a measly 3% in a savings account, it takes 24 years to double your money. You don't have that kind of time. But what if you were hitting an annual average growth of 28.9%?

72 ÷ 28.9 ≈ 2.5 years.

Your money doubles every 2.5 years.

Think about that. In a decade, your money could double four times. That is what I call Wealth Capacity. This isn't just about "saving for a rainy day." This is about building an engine that generates legacy-level wealth while you sleep. But you can't hit those numbers if you’re constantly losing 30% of your gains to market volatility or taxes. You need the Shield to protect the Sword’s work.

The Warrior-Steward: Money as a Tool of the Covenant

As a Vice President and Agent, but more importantly as a man of faith, I view money through a different lens. Money isn't the root of all evil; the love of money is. In reality, money is a tool of the Covenant.

In Luke 16:11, it says, "So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?"

Finances are a test of trustworthiness. Stewardship is a spiritual responsibility. When we help you get out of debt and start building wealth, we aren't just helping you buy a bigger boat. We are helping you fulfill your purpose. We are helping you move from a place of survival (Hell Week) to a place of stewardship (The Mission).

Whether you’re in Texas, Michigan, California, Georgia, or Idaho, the principles of financial order don't change. From the ancient wisdom of stewardship to the modern strategies of tax-saving investment, the goal is the same: Freedom.
